Stained Glass Sun, Handcross, West Sussex,
1995
Using traditional skills of stained glass
painting and acid etching I created this cheerful panel of
decorative glass work.
This piece is in a light box set into the
wall of a private house and is made using 2 sheets of glass,
one flashed blue on white and the other flashed ruby on white.
I etched away the sun and then the detail was painted and
fired. The two pieces are fixed together in a wooden frame.
Flashed glass is fantastic and I love using
this. It is glass which has one colour for the main body and
has a very thin layer of another colour 'flashed' over the
top. We can then apply a variety of acid resists from wax
to plastic film and then immerse in a bath of hydrofluoric
acid. The acid eats away at the unprotected areas of glass
to reveal the design.
