About Me
I am Amanda Winfield. In 1980 I attended
Medway College Of Art and Design for a years Foundation
course in Art and went on to Chelsea School of
Art, London to study for 3 years in Mural Design
and Public Art. This course was fantastic, a mixed
media fine art based course which allowed us to
study printmaking, textile design, fine art painting
and drawing, technical drawing, sculpture and
of course glass.
I left Chelsea in 1984 and was very lucky to
secure a job as assistant to Set Designer Tom
McPhillips who went on to found the company Atomic
Design in the States. What great training,
we designed sets for bands on tour, shows in the
theatre and work for television including childrens
TV and advertisements. As assistant to Tom I learnt
so much about working to deadlines, striving for
the best for the customer, realising the design
and how to enjoy work!
In the spring of 1986 I joined Goddard &
Gibbs Studios in London as a trainee. When I left
Goddard & Gibbs in 2002 I was their Studio
Manager, responsible for all the stained glass
work that came through their studios.
Since that time I have been developing skills
and styles using the vast store of knowledge that
working in such a busy studio has afforded me.
Its been a very busy and exciting (and at
times frustrating!) time for me. I have been working
in all aspects of stained glass, leaded and resin
bonded; and I have embraced warm glass work with
great enthusiasm and love the direction my design
is taking now.
Glass is a very exciting and thrilling medium,
those moments of holding up a panel to the light
for the first time or opening the kiln in the
morning are always well worth all the work put
in on the previous days. What a thrill!
